Maintain good relations with profs, work hard to get through the course and have fun (coming half way across the world you deserve to have some fun).
The visa interview experience was easy given my scores and credits. I had to give GRE and TOEFL standard tests to be taken for studies in USA apart from my B.Tech. Preparation took me about 6 months. I went to a professional who gave me advise on preparation for the GRE, TOEFL tests and Universities to apply based on my interests of course for masters. I had no problem booking airline tickets. But my airlines did not offer any student discount fare. No excess baggage was allowed. 2 checkin¿s are allowed ¿ 50 pounds and 1 carry on ¿ 10 to 12 pounds. I landed at Newark International airport and arranged my own means to get to university. I did not face any immigration issues¿just small talk regarding the scores and why did I choose this university.
Program is well structured. You will be given list of courses to choose, at the same time you have certain must courses for completion of masters program. Professors are professional and encourage new ideas, its masters program right.
I lived off campus. Library is the best. Part time jobs are offered on first come first serve basis, no preference international or local candidates as long as you can prove you are worthful. Towns here are used to international students for a while now. So never had a problem with social life. Night life is great near the campus. Winters are very cold and summers, hot. Usually there is a Indian association for almost all the universities in USA. They usually manage accommodation, Indian cultural functions and activities, get togethers and farewells.
Placements depends on the university. But not a problem finding jobs off campus. Lot of Indian companies offering training and placements. They will take care of your work permits. Alumni definitely helps in going though the placement process as they have already seen this. Maintaining good relations with Seniors definitely helps.
