This program is built around a series of courses in theory, musicianship, analysis, and music history, as well as performance (both individual and ensemble) and piano proficiency requirements. The program is rooted in the Western, classical tradition; however, courses in modern composition and theory and jazz theory and history are available as well. Students may also choose to concentrate in one of four areas (performance, conducting, composition, history/theory), should they wish to study any particular discipline in more depth.

Students whose native language is not in English should have the TOEFL score of 110 on the IBT (Internet-based test) or 637 on the PBT (Paper-based test). Students following the British educational system should submit an O-level and A-level result (or predicted results) is required for admission.

The Department of Music was formally founded in 1947, but music has been an important facet of the University from its inception, when founder Jane Stanford encouraged sacred concerts in Memorial Church. They offer undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of subjects, as well as group and private lessons for students, and opportunities for ensemble participation. The Department of Music presents more than 150 concerts and recitals each year, providing performance opportunities for students throughout the University. Over 1,000 students, most of whom are not music majors, participate in ensembles, chamber groups, private lessons, and major productions, including a fully-staged presentation of Mozart's The Magic Flute (2002). The facilities are Braun Music Center, The Music Library supports music research, composition and performance at Stanford with a collection of 110,000 books and scores, 34,000 sound and video recordings, 9,000 microforms, and several hundred active periodical subscriptions. Most of Stanford's rare music materials form the Memorial Library of Music, housed in the Green Library Department of Special Collections. Some music books and recordings are also located in the Green Library stacks and the Media/Microtext Center and 00,000 recordings in the Archive of Recorded Sound make it one of the five largest archives of its kind in the United States. From wax cylinders to compact discs, the collection reflects the entirety of recorded sound history.

Stanford graduate residences offer living environments for students diverse in background, language, culture, race, and religion. Residences serve as focal points of intellectual, recreational, and social interchange. Through its residence program, Stanford seeks to provide graduate students with a supportive, friendly environment where they are encouraged to develop a strong sense of community. Student Housing Rates are approximate and subject to change. The single student housing rates reflect the charge per person. All rates include utilities (except telephone, cable and Ethernet). There is no difference in rates for furnished or unfurnished apartments of the same type. Residents are also required to pay a house dues fee each quarter/semester. House dues are used for educational programs, social activities, and other services that are not included in room rent. Dues range from $20-55 per term. The board rate in the co-ops is approximately $500 to $800 per quarter. Students are billed rent at a constant per diem rate for the full University calendar year (September 1-August 31). Quarterly and semestral rates are quoted in full monthly increments, but bill will be based on specific contract dates. There are many dining options available to graduate students. Students living in co-ops must purchase their house board plan and participate in the preparation of meals. Students living in other residences may choose to cook for themselves if living in apartments or if they have kitchen privileges at Crothers or Crothers Memorial Halls, eat at on-campus or nearby restaurants and snack bars, or purchase a meal plan offered by the University.
